Dear HAFamily,

We’re launching a major video campaign today! As you may know, the new administration is threatening to cut all federal funding for the arts. We can’t let this happen. In times like these, artists voices matter more than ever. Artists are here to shed light on the important issues communities face today. Art brings communities together, drives local economy, encourages creativity and diversity, promotes education, and challenges important issues like hatred, racism, sexism, anti-semitism, and more.

So today, we’re starting a trend! We want to this video to reach 1,000 people in 10 days! Share/post this message on your Twitter/Facebook/Insta account today by clicking here or below! We’re using a cool tool called Thunderclap that will help amplify our message.

Here’s what we need:

  1. Donate $10

  2. Share this video with 10 friends

SAMORA PINDERHUGHES ON ART AND ACTIVISM

As a Harlem transplant, Pinderhughes recognizes that his presence in the historic neighborhood is “a complicated reality.” He recognizes that the same struggle with gentrification in Harlem is happening in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Pinderhughes was raised.
We sat down with Samora to learn more about his most recent acclaimed album, The Transformations Suite, and his thoughts on art and activism.

Artist Interviews

We asked the #HAF2014 Artists some questions about their work. Read what they had to say here!

HAF: Where do you go to be inspired?

India Carney: ANY place in New York can inspire creativity. Creative sparks have ignited during late train rides on the 3 train. The 3 train is the best train 🙂

HAF: What themes do you explore in your work?

212Green: We write and produce all of our own music about whatever we’re experiencing, either personally or through a friend. Themes always have a Harlem backdrop and are most often about relationships (good and bad), party experiences and trying to get noticed as young artists in the music biz!

HAF: When did you know you wanted to devote your life to producing art?

Tyrone Birkett: It was a process that developed over a span of years. When I attended Quincy Troupe’s Black Roots Festival, seeing saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter play live, reading Maya Angelou, viewing artist Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series…

HAF: What’s the best piece of advice you could give to young artists?

David “Vades” Joseph: Love is the most important thing you will ever have as an artist. It will be your breath of fresh air and will take you to places you never thought you would go. It is the guiding light that helps you even through the most difficult of times. Never lose sight of it.

HAF: When did you know you wanted to devote your life to producing art?

Alia Kache: I’ve always loved dance and theater. While I’ve been a professional dancer for about 11 years, the desire to be a choreographer, and produce my own works has been a more recent thing. About 4 years ago I was dancing for a company in Portugal, and after hearing “I love your dancing, but I just don’t know where to put you” several times from different choreographers, I knew exactly what to do. I’d make a place for myself.

Check out the 2014 Festival Page to learn more about each artist!
