Launched in 1979 as a catalyst for a Brooklyn performing arts scene and to bring people back into Prospect Park after years of neglect, Celebrate Brooklyn! was an early anchor in the park’s revitalization and has become one of the city’s foremost summer cultural attractions.

All BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! performances are free! The festival attracts upwards of 250,000 attendees from across New York City to the Prospect Park Bandshell each summer.

DanceBrazil

The dancers in founding artistic director Jelon Vieira’s DANCEBRAZIL “glow enthusiastically as they let rip at highest energy,” (NY Times) fusing contemporary movement with the dance/martial arts form of capoeira. The company formed after evolving from grass-roots workshops at the Clark Center for the Arts in NYC in 1977. Alvin Ailey joined its board of directors in 1980 and helped focus its objectives, emphasizing DanceBrazil’s ability to speak to a broad North American community. Within a few years DanceBrazil premiered at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, and it has been a favorite on stages around the world ever since. The program for its long-awaited return to the Bandshell includes Malungos, which takes its name from a slang word used among enslaved Africans traveling on ships to Brazil, and Gueto, Vieira’s testament to the vitality of marginalized communities.

The evening begins with a festive set by FORRO IN THE DARK, a collective of New York-based Brazilian ex pats: Mauro Refosco (zabumba drum and vocals), Guilherme Monteiro (guitar and vocals) and Jorge Continentino (pifano flute, sax and vocals). One of the NYC’s must-see buzz bands, these guys take the traditional hip-swiveling, dancefloor-filling, rural party music of Brazil’s northeastern states “to new heights by drawing on influences ranging from Enrique Iglesias to Beck.” (NPR)

Honoring David Berliner

David Berliner

David Berliner is the Chief Operating Officer of Forest City Ratner Companies and a passionate supporter of the arts and art in public places. Mr. Berliner’s (and Forest City’s)  long-standing friendship with BRIC began in 1992 with Forest City’s  first development in Brooklyn, One Pierrepont Plaza, which housed BRIC’s Rotunda Gallery as its cultural component.

At Forest City Ratner, Mr. Berliner is responsible for overall corporate leadership and optimizing the diverse operating portfolio of the firm, which owns and operates 34 commercial, retail and residential properties in the New York metropolitan area.  A successful negotiator and problem-solver and a respected leader, Mr. Berliner has been integral to the growth and success of Forest City Ratner since joining the firm in 1989. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Berliner led complex negotiations to acquire the Brooklyn Nets NBA basketball team, and played an essential role in developing the team’s showpiece 18,000-seat Barclays Center arena and performance venue.

Given his love for and dedication to the arts, Mr. Berliner directed the curatorial arts program at Barclays Center, which features permanent commissioned works highlighting Brooklyn artists as well as inspiring exhibits. He is on the board of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, where he serves as Treasurer. Mr. Berliner is also Chairman of the Board of the Madison Square Park Conservancy.  As a founding member of MSPC’s Curatorial Committee, he has been a key member of the advisory group that sources and evaluates proposals to commission work of contemporary artists to be exhibited in the popular park.

Performance by Chaka Khan

Chaka Khan

“Queen of Funk” Chaka Khan is an international music icon who has won ten Grammys and released 22 albums during her 40-year career and is celebrated around the world for her timeless and influential musical ability. She has collaborated with some of the most revered artists of the last five decades including Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Miles Davis, Mary J. Blige and Quincy Jones, among many others. Touching on many genres including R&B, jazz, pop, rock, gospel, country and classical, Chaka will set the Bandshell on fire with her burning soul/funk grooves and soaring vocals that touch the sky!

From the moment she burst onto the music scene in the 1970s as the 18-year-old lead singer of the multiracial band Rufus, her powerful voice and show-stopping stage presence set her apart from any other singer. Together with Rufus she released over ten albums that included hits such as “Sweet Thing” and “Tell Me Something Good.” She left Rufus five years later to launch a solo career that spanned over two decades, with continual acclaim due to hits “I’m Every Woman” and “Ain’t Nobody.” In the past fifteen years, Khan has continued to create and collaborate with other artists while also penning an autobiography, Chaka! Through the Fire, starring on Broadway and taking on philanthropic and entrepreneurial ventures.

Vote, It Ain’t Illegal Yet! honors the 50th anniversary of the landmark Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965 with a moving and exciting combination of film, music, and spoken word at the Prospect Park Bandshell.

Directed by author/filmmaker/journalist and longtime Fort Greene resident Nelson George, this special BRIC commission honors the 50th anniversary of the landmark Voting Rights Acts of 1965 with a moving and exciting combination of film, music, and spoken word. This ambitious exploration of American polls yesterday and today celebrates and recognizes the journey we have collectively undertaken towards equality at the voting booth—and the distance we have left to travel. Vote, It Ain’t Illegal Yet! will include contributions by BURNING SPEAR, VERNON REID, MAYA AZUCENA, ROGER GUENVEUR SMITH, CARL HANCOCK RUX, ROSARIO DAWSON, RAMYA RAMANA, and many more. With musical direction by D-NICE.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
With the goal of honest, holistic, and poetic journalism in mind, Celebrate Brooklyn! is asking YOU to contribute your story to this project. When and where was your first time at the booth? Have you ever come up against barriers to voting? Did you or your parents have a different experience before 1964? Whatever your experience has been as an American voter, we would be honored to include it in the evening’s film and spoken word processions. All forms of expression are accepted: photographs, video (maximum 90 seconds), written testimonials, audio reenactments, etc. Be creative! And you just may see your work come to life next summer on our stage.

To submit:

Not sure what to submit? Answer these questions:

  • What’s your first memory of voting?
  • When was the first time you voted?
  • Do you know anything about the 1964 and 1965 Civil rights and Voting rights acts?  If so what?
  • Why is voting important?
  • Are you aware of the many state laws across the country designed to limit the right to vote?
  • Why do you think they are becoming wide spread?
  • If you don’t vote why not?

DEADLINE

To encourage participation among citizens and voters city-wide around this program, BRIC is partnering with NYC Votes, a program of the New York City Campaign Finance Board.

PERFORMANCE – Poet Aja Monet — 5/30-31 _Kraine Theatre, nyc

We LOVE THIS POET!!

We first discovered her during tapings of Def Poetry Jam, while she was still in college.

She traveled, lived abroad and returned to triumphant performances back in the United States, even deeper and more resonant than she was before.

She recently dazzled during the CARRIE MAE WEEMS/LIVE tribute at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

She is both the Nikki Giovanni and the late great June Jordan for the new generation. Fierce, funny, poignant, wise.

Don’t miss any opportunity you get to see her live.

Geri Allen & Carrie Mae Weems: Slow Fade To Black Performance June 15 2012

Geri Allen & Carrie Mae Weems: Slow Fade To Black

Celebrate Brooklyn series  June 15, 2012

Prospect Park Bandshell   doors open at 7pm

With ESPERANZA SPALDING / TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON / LIZZ WRIGHT / PATRICE RUSHEN AND MORE!

The great pianist GERI ALLEN and the world-renowned photographer and video artist CARRIE MAE WEEMS team up for this special world premiere commission. SLOW FADE TO BLACK combines Weems’ arresting projections with an astonishing night of music featuring Allen’s new trio with fellow jazz giants ESPERANZA SPALDING and TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON, her regular group Timeline, LIZZ WRIGHT, PATRICE RUSHEN, the Howard University vocal group AFRO BLUE, the tap dancer MAURICE CHESTNUT, and many surprises.

Carrie Mae Weems,  a remarkable woman  and gifted raconteur who has a major three-decade retrospective coming to the Guggenheim Museum in the fall of 2013, explores issues of gender, race, and identity in her work.

These themes inform Slow Fade to Black, in which live performance and video will comingle on stage and screen in unimagined ways. The night promises to be unlike anything that has ever happened at Celebrate Brooklyn!, or anywhere else.

We have previously discussed how much we admire Master drumstress  TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON.  PATRICE RUSHEN, bandleader for the ARESENIO HALL SHOW and pop hit writer-singer-keyboardist of “FORGET ME NOTS”, had a brilliant run of moody beautiful jazz albums in the 70s that are always valuable acquisitions for your collection.

Celebrate the GLORY of a collective of individually Creative Women in  live performance!

The series is free but a $3 donation is always greatly appreciated.

And Mark your Calendars NOW  for the Guggenheim Museum Fall 2013

Laura Marling performs

CELEBRATE BROOKLYN! @ Prospect Park Bandshell
June 14, 2012
7:00 PM-10:00 PM
with Michael Kiwanuka

In her native England, singer-songwriter Laura Marling, who was born in 1990, has often been described as an old soul, wise beyond her years. While so many artists of any age attempt to locate their inner child, Marling, with a sometime steely gaze, measures the prerogatives of youth against the looming realities of adulthood – the spectre of mortality, the betrayals of love, the balm of sex, the yearning for companionship, the need for independence. As the Times Of London recently posited, “Who else is making music as ambitious, as haunting, as centuries-straddling, as thought-provoking and artistically tenacious as this? And the answer is: nobody. No, really. Not a soul.”

Her two startlingly self-assured albums — Alas I Cannot Swim (2008) and I Speak Because I Can (2010) — brought the self-effacing and relatively shy Marling an extraordinary level of acclaim in her homeland, with each of them in turn being nominated for the U.K.’s prestigious Mercury Prize. She subsequently won a 2011 Brit Award, England’s equivalent to the Grammy, as Best British Female and an NME Award as Best Solo Artist.

Michael Kiwanuka is a British soul singer whose sound has been rightfully compared to Otis Redding and Bill Withers. Having just released his debut album “Home Again” in the UK, Kiwanuka’s music has already garnered much attention including the top spot in BBC’s Sound of 2012.

CELEBRATE BROOKLYN’s full 2012 summer lineup will be announced soon!
Be sure to join their mailing list to be the first to receive the announcement!
