DANCE – PERIAPSIS MUSIC AND DANCE PRESENTS “NOESIS”  AT GK ARTSCENTER 6/3-4 *Bklyn

PERIAPSIS MUSIC AND DANCE PRESENTS “NOESIS”  AT GK ARTSCENTER, JUNE 3 – 4

Periapsis Music and Dance presents NOESIS, a new work by resident choreographer Hannah Weber and composer Jonathan Howard Katz, on June 3 at 8:00 pm and June 4 and 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm at GK ArtsCenter (aka Gelsey Kirkland Academy), 29 Jay Street, Brooklyn.  Tickets are $24 advance, $30 at the door, with special pricing for students and artists of $15 advance and $20 at the door, available at https://www.artful.ly/store/events/11950.

NOESIS is derived from Greek, referring to the intellect or an awareness of the mind.  Choreographer Hannah Weber said that the work “explores nostalgia and our past relationships. It reflects trying to find the balance between how our memories help us in the present and how they can still hurt us . . . finding a middle ground between letting our memories and experiences hold us back or push us forward.”

The company’s work emphasizes collaboration between choreographer and composer.  Artistic director Jonathan Howard Katz said of NOESIS, “There’s been a lot of back-and-forth in the process for this piece in particular—in some places the dance came first and, in other places, the music.  Hannah [Weber] and I had been discussing the piece for a while, and the concept has developed over time, but our concepts also change as we see each other’s work and then respond to meet it.”

Also on the program are two works from last year’s The Portrait Project, which involved six guest choreographers in collaboration with composers, exploring ways to combine one dancer and one musician on stage.  The company will present Twine, by choreographer Manuel Vignoulle working with Katz as composer; and The Heaviness of Air, by choreographer Helen Simoneau and composer Mary Kouyoumdjian.

Several guests will perform as well, as part of the Periapsis Open Series service program:  DoubleTake Dance Co with composer Eugene Marlow (Saturday and Sunday evening shows); Samuel Asher Kunzmanwith composer Steve Kunzman (Saturday evening and Saturday afternoon shows); and Maleek Washingtonwith composers Jack Fuller and Paul Wilson (Sunday shows).
