DANCE – STEPS BEYOND FOUNDATION

Steps on Broadway is the NYC epicenter for dancers tucked upstairs on the upper west side with nearly a dozen studios. It is a place where dancers come to train, to network, and to become educated on their place in the field, or the place dance holds in the lives of those artists that we like to celebrate, support, and watch from the audience.

This fall season launches a new season of Artist Talks, kicking off November 12 with “Ballet Training for the 21st Century Dancer”- a conversation with actress, dancer and teacher, Nina Goldman, master teacher Zvi Gothheiner,  Artistic Director of Juilliard’s Dance Division, and former ABT prima ballerina Ashley Tuttle. The conversations are always insightful, informative and empowering, providing useful tools and resources for particpants. The remainder of the season is included below. We always love to sit in a theater to watch dance. Rarely do we sit in a studio and talk about it.

STEPS BEYOND FOUNDATION PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHOREOGRAPHERS AND ASPIRING PROFESSIONALS WITH SEASON OF PERFORMANCE LABS AND ARTIST TALKS

The Steps Beyond Foundation, Steps on Broadway’s non-profit arm which connects artists and community through dialogue, performance, and artistic collaboration, announces upcoming 2016-17 Performance Lab and Artists Talk Series. In engaging emerging dance makers, aspiring professionals, and dance enthusiasts, the Foundation will host a winter and spring Performance Lab January 15 and May 21, four Artist Talk’s November 12, February 11, April 22 and June 24 and a benefit performance of Mimi Quillin’s one woman show, Call Fosse at the Minskoff on December 3rd. All events are held in the Steps Studio Theater on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

In line with the Foundation’s mission to act as an educational vehicle for both aspiring and professional artists, the Artists Talk Series consists of conversations with internationally renowned industry professionals, book signings, DVD launch parties, and film screenings. The series fosters a creative and provocative learning environment, and the opportunity to network with dance, theater and music professionals. On November 12, the Foundation will welcome Artistic Director of the Juilliard Dance Division, Larry Rhodes, master teacher and founder of ZviDance, Zvi Gotheiner, dancer and teacher Nina Goldman, and prima ballerina and teacher, Ashley Tuttle, for the first talk of the 2016-2017 Season: Ballet Training for the 21st Century Dancer. Future artist talks are scheduled for February 11, April 22 and June 24, covering aspects of auditioning, teaching, performance, and elements of the creative process.

The Performance Lab offers choreographers and emerging dance makers an opportunity to present completed works, works in progress, or experimental concepts in a highly curated studio theater setting. Led by Steps Beyond’s Production Manager Bradley Shelver, each choreographer selected for the lab presents an eight-minute premiere and is granted technical tools and support to cultivate an evening presentation. The first lab of the season took place October 9 and featured performances by New Jersey Dance Theater Ensemble, Periapsis Music and Dance, FJK Dance, and more. The next lab will take place January 15, with a focus on musical theater, and May 21, for an evening of ballet premieres. Choreographer selections and works to be presented will be announced upon application deadlines.
