Developing a career as a freelance producer is challenging enough. Taking the next steps to form your own company can seem even more daunting. But it doesn’t have to be.Whether you’re forming a company for freelance work, a movie or setting up shop for a multi-series deal there are a number of issues you’ll need to address. Loan Out vs. Production Company? Corp, LLC or Partnership? How you answer these questions will affect your taxable income, your liability and your relationship with your employees. Even if you are the only employee!

Topics will include company formation, taxation, liabilities, and trademark and copyright issues.

 

 

 

 

Thea J. Kerman is Of Counsel at Beigelman, Feiner & Feldman, P.C. She has over 25 years of legal experience and is an expert in the entertainment publishing, merchandising, toy and licensing industries. Her experience includes theatrical films, live action and animated episodic television programs, broadcast and cable television movies of the week and documentaries. Kerman has extensive experience providing financial production counsel and other legal services for films produced for major studios, broadcast and cable television networks as well as independently produced films and international co-productions. Prior to establishing her own law firm in 1990, Kerman was the Senior Production Counsel for Tri-star Pictures in Los Angeles.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Nancy L. Adams is a Certified Public Accountant with 30 years of public accounting experience. She is a principal at Adelman, Katz & Mond LLP. Nancy currently works with a significant number of clients in the film and television industry, including documentary and feature film companies, individual producers, actors and other industry personnel.
