AAIFF returns to Flushing. Known as one of fastest-growing Asian American communities in New York and for its diverse Asian fod scene, AAIFF 2015 is bringing together neighborhood food trucks and local food purveyors for 5 days of free community events.

AAIFF 2015 WORLD PREMIERES!
 

Directed by award-winning Filipino filmmaker Jerrold Tarog, HENERAL LUNA follows the life of General Antonio Luna during the Philippine-American war in an epic historical battle, as he tries to lead his countrymen against colonial masters. Pivoting between the internal struggle to unite his men, while trying to rise above their raging disputes, the story showcases one of the Philippine’s most brilliant military men trying to fulfill the promise of the Philippine Revolution. Star actor John Arcilla, who plays General Antonio Luna, will be in attendance for the World Festival Premiere.

In this minimalist film, Johnny, a struggling Chinese American comedian in San Francisco, finds himself on a downward spiral of disappointment in his private and personal life. Johnny’s redemption and solace come after a sexual encounter with Jeanie, an older woman who has appeared on his doorstep while escaping her own troubles and who may be his estranged relative. Director Matt Szymanowski and main actors Noreen Lee and Edwin Li will be in attendance for the screening.

In Lauren Knapp’s feature debut, rock music finds a new home in a country known for its nomadic culture. LIVE FROM UB follows Mongolia’s transition into finding a voice in the 21st century by documenting one of Mongolia’s most promising independent bands, Mohanik, as they create a new sound for their country and discover what it means to be Mongolian today.

In this romantic-comedy, director Lawrence Gan explores many different sides of love. After high-school graduation, Jake Chen finds himself starting a new chapter in his life, living a simple and happy life by taking on the family business, he thought he had everything solved. However, through a fateful encounter with a mysterious yet familiar woman, Joanna Lee, his life may not be so simple anymore.

MISS TIBET: BEAUTY IN EXILE   

 

MISS TIBET: BEAUTY IN EXILE, follows the journey of Tenzin Kenoche’s personal journey as a beauty pageant contestant and her personal growth during the pageant. This documentary uses the style of Cinéma vérité, combining direct style, simple shots, and a fly on the wall realism in order to unveil and showcase the cruel reality of the many issues that are going on in Tibet.

Director Norah Shapiro will be in attendance for the screening.

MY VOICE, MY LIFE

 

AAIFF 2015 raises the opening night curtains with Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Ruby Yang’s feature film MY VOICE, MY LIFE. Following a group of under-privileged Hong Kong youngsters, MY VOICE, MY LIFE is the life affirming journey of self-discovery and growth as this group of misfits undergoes six-months of rigorous training to produce a musical on stage.

Director Ruby Yang will be attendance for the screening.

When an aspiring Indian software professional finds himself trying to pursue the American dream, yet cannot do so due to his residential status, he is forced to make a decision, to continue his struggle in order to stay in America or move back to his home country, India.

Director Rucha Humnabadkar will be in attendance for the screening.

FACTORY BOSS

 

Directed by Wei Zhang, is a compelling look into the heart of China’s manufacturing culture. Based on Wei’s personal experiences in Shenzhen, FACTORY BOSS follows the global economic effect of the rising demand for cheap Chinese labor and the social issues surrounding its labor force. With increasing competition pushing profit margins to a razor thin line, the future of not only the business, but also of the workers rest heavily on the shoulders of factory boss, Lin Dalin.

Director Zhang Wei will be in attendance for the screening.
