The sheer audacity of Whiplash will leave you breathless – as if you’ve just dodged a bullet, or run a marathon. In a virtuosic directorial move, Damien Chazelle structures this brilliant film about the relationship between a musical prodigy and his teacher as if it were a high-octane thriller or a competitive sports movie. Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller, Divergent, The Spectacular Now) is an ambitious young jazz musician, eager to shake off his mediocre background and hungry to rise to the top of his elite music conservatory. Terence Fletcher (J K Simmons, Spider-Man, Juno) is the fierce, unorthodox instructor who leads the top ensemble at the school. When Fletcher selects Neyman to join his band, the stakes are dramatically raised. Sniffing out the fear beneath Neyman’s confidence, Fletcher ruthlessly begins to exploit it, pushing Neyman beyond the limits of both his ability and his sanity. The cat-and-mouse game that ensues – at 300 beats per minute – makes for enthralling, compulsive viewing. Featuring intense, tightly-wound performances from Teller and Simmons, and editing from Tom Cross that is worthy of the film’s title, Whiplash won both the Grand Jury and the Audience awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is loosely based on Chazelle’s own experience as an aspiring drummer.

Getting your Script Past the Gatekeeper

With a finished feature film script in hand, you’re ready for the world to read your masterpiece but your voice is one of many. First and foremost, our film industry craves talent but we need to be able to hear you above the noise, we need to be able to find you amongst the thousands, millions, of writers preaching they have the next big thing. This session focuses on how to get your work read by those who can actively champion writers: literary agents, producers, development executives, etc. We’ll be using 3 of your projects as case studies to showcase a variety of ways to get your work seen by the creative gatekeepers.

Script Boutique (www.scriptboutique.co.uk) launched to the public on 17 May 2014 as a free online script facilitation platform and screenwriting talent source. Screenwriters are able to upload up to 3 feature length screenplays and as many short film scripts as they like. Meanwhile, vetted industry executives (incorporating literary agents, producers, development execs, and more) have the opportunity to search for talent and projects to champion and develop. “Good Acting is Good Writing… and Vice Versa”

A workshop with Stephen May, the Director of The Screen Arts Institute – for actors, directors, producers and writers. Analysing how to shape a scene, how to shape a performance – illustrating that story (and subtext) are nearly always king.

This workshop will use a key scene from a contemporary film to illustrate some of the key principles behind the development of powerful drama. Audience members will have the opportunity to be actively involved.

The workshop will be led by TV and film development guru Stephen May, director of the SAI. Stephen is a writer/actor/producer/director who has worked with the best on both sides of the Atlantic – including the likes of Castle Rock Films, Working Title Films, Tiger Aspect, the BBC, and artists such as Hugh Grant, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore etc.

Participants will be introduced to the idea of creating cameraless films and making time visible in film using examples of artists working in this way. Using pens, scratching implements and hole punches, we will then experiment with marking and manipulating the films surface to articulate movement and time. We will also explore scratching into the films optical soundtrack to visualise rhythm before projecting the work back to the group. Granted near-unfettered access to the notoriously insular Studio Ghibli, director Mami Sunada follows the three men who are the lifeblood of Ghibli – the eminent director Hayao Miyazaki, the producer Toshio Suzuki, and the elusive and influential ‘other director’ Isao Takahata – over the course of a year as the studio rushes to complete two films, Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises and Takahata’s The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. Make an animation directly from Minecraft! This workshop will involve participants all playing together on one server. Due to the versatile nature of the game it can be used for many purposes. Over the workshop you will learn how to film the in game play, export it into a piece of editing software, create a film and add on all the extras such as sound.

BlockBuilders uses digital technology to engage people within their community. They run a variety of workshops across the country where they get young people to use Minecraft to express their opinions, or teach them about a wide range of issues.

VFX: 3D Sculpting

Pixologic’s ZBrush is an essential tool in the arsenal of many modern film studios, post production houses and game companies. In this talk by digital sculptor, Glen Southern, not only do we spend time looking at character design using ZBrush but we also show how you can quickly move from concept art to concept sculpts and finish with production ready models with good topology and textures. We will use a combination of time-lapse videos and live Sculpting to show how you can make an idea come to life in very little time. We’ll also share some pro tips and tricks along the way.

The session will finish with a talk about career opportunities in the VFX industry which is facing a skills shortage, together with a Q&A with Glen.

Feel free to bring along your laptop as we will be sharing some of the models we use on the day, and you can follow along in parts of the session, and failing that, good old pencil and a drawing pad will be suitable too.

The secret to making compelling documentaries as a self-shoot documentary producer which engage the audience from start to finish.

Dean Arnett is an award-winning, self-shooting producer, with 23 years’ experience. After many years working for the BBC, he is now freelance, shooting documentaries, corporates and TV features with a variety of cameras, all around the world. He also provides training for the BBC, PA, Archant and other media groups. Dean is currently in production on three documentaries, which he is shooting on a Canon C300.

The only terms Edwyn Collins could recall when he emerged from a massive hemorrhagic stroke that hospitalised him for six months in 2005 were ‘yes’, ‘no’, ‘Grace Maxwell’ and ‘the possibilities are endless’. One of the UK’s best-loved and most respected singer/songwriters was cast adrift from his previous life. The first act of Edward Lovelace and James Hall’s moving film reflects Collins’s feelings of disorientation and confusion. Into this swirling mindscape come bursts of memory, a young, handsome pop star full of verve and confidence. Collins’s son William is cast as a young Edwyn, courting Grace (Yasmin Paige), the woman who would become his partner, manager and the rock to which he anchors his recovery. And what a recovery it is, as the film sensitively charts Collins’s extraordinary and heroic efforts as he works toward performing his old songs again, and writing and recording new material.

If you’re dismayed the total lack of women in Hollywood but don’t know what to do about it, the BFI Future Film Festival might be your first stop to change the game. Taking place over three days from February 20-22, the festival – open to anyone between the ages of 15 and 25 – is packed with 70 separate workshops, masterclasses, Q&As and screenings featuring the best films by upcoming filmmakers and, most importantly, providing opportunities to connect with the industry and kick-start your career in film.

This year, the Future Film Festival’s eighth, will go ahead with one major point of difference: girls will be at the forefront. Teaming up with Women in Film and TV, their stellar programme features talks with speakers like documentary filmmaker Kim Longinotto and The Great Hip Hop Hoax director Jeannie Finlay. Not to mention the scores of young female filmmakers up for awards the BFI gives out, like Hannah Gautry and the Oscar-nominated Daisy Jacobs.

One other talking point is a panel discussion by director Destiny Ekaragha and the BFI’s own Matimba Kabalika about how young people from minority ethnic backgrounds can get their foot in the door, which will be explored in “Fight The Power: How to Be Black in the British Film Industry”.

“We’ve been making sure that we support a diversity of filmmakers for ages now, and the (lack of female representation) has been an issue that’s been on our mind increasingly over the years; every year we try to make sure that we get a good number of female industry speakers at the festival,” says BFI Education Programmer Noel Goodwin…. “Over the last few years we’ve seen that our audience is more and more young women, and we wanted to make a real statement about it this year, so we thought we’d team up with Women in Film and TV, who we worked with on the festival in previous years, to deliver keynote speeches by leading women filmakers.”

What’s the best way to get ahead as a young filmmaker? “For anybody, whether you’re a young woman or a young man, it’s about not taking ‘no’ for an answer, having real goals in mind and working towards them,” says Goodwin. “I think there are more opportunities for women to get into film now, and potentially the only barriers are yourself – you just need to knuckle down and have faith, be focused, be determined, don’t take no for an answer.”
