BKLYN DESIGNS — Brooklyn’s very own contemporary design event, takes place May 8-10 at the Brooklyn Expo Center.

From its new home in Greenpoint, the show will officially kick off the citywide NYCxDESIGN initiative — with its own Opening Night Party on May 8 and as an official sponsor of the NYCxDESIGN launch party the following night — setting the stage for a month-long celebration of design. With a brand new identity, expanded scope, curated marketplace, strong media partnerships, and support from local design associations and companies, BKLYN DESIGNS promises to be more inspiring than ever, charming design veterans and newcomers alike!

We’re on the hunt for Brooklyn’’s finest to exhibit at the show and would appreciate your help spreading the word! Brooklyn-based makers, manufacturers, architects and designers are encouraged to apply by February 20 for the first round of jury reviews. In support of emerging designers, the show is also offering a 10% discount to sole proprietors who have been in business for less than one year.

From May 8th to 10th, all roads, and ferries, will lead to Brooklyn. Shining a spotlight on the borough’s bustling design community, BKLYN DESIGNS—the internationally renowned, juried exhibition of the best furniture, lighting and home accessories made or designed in Brooklyn—will be the official kick-off for NYCxDESIGN and is an official sponsor of the NYCxDESIGN Opening Night Party on May 9th. For the 2015 exhibit, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and its new production partner, Novità Communications, are working closely with the organizers of WantedDesign Industry

City and other Brooklyn institutions to create a borough-wide celebration of design.

This year’s show, which has been dubbed BKLYN DESIGNS 3.0, promises to be more inspiring than ever, presenting the highest caliber furnishings and home accessories from Brooklyn-based artisans, designers and manufacturers, including many companies that have been certified as Brooklyn-Made by the Brooklyn Chamber. Through a partnership with Dumbo-based graphic design and communication firm, Maiarelli Studio, BKLYN DESIGNS has a completely fresh identity, including a new logo and website.

BKYLN DESIGNS 2015 will have an expanded scope by including furniture, lighting, textiles, surfaces and accessories, as well as design and architectural services.

The call for applications has been extended to February 20th, and the Chamber is offering a 10 percent discount for designers who are sole proprietors and in business for less than a year.


Another exciting highlight of BKLYN DESIGNS 2015 will be BKLYN BUYS, a marketplace of design objects and accessories curated by Bonnie Mackay, former Director of Creative, Merchandising and Marketing at MoMA; Matilda McQuaid, Deputy Curatorial Director at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum; and stylist/design journalist Melissa Feldman.

Strengthening this retail hub will be the Dwell Store, which will feature a pop-up of locally made products from the magazine’s online store. In addition to the inspiring products on display, the show will feature a robust program of design talks, seminars, exhibitions and events. May 8th is the official Trade Day, geared towards the A&D community, with support from local design associations such as the AIA and ASID, and will be followed by consumer-oriented programming throughout the weekend.

Highlights currently include: panel discussions with Metropolis Editor in Chief Susan Szenasy, Dwell Editor in Chief Amanda Dameron And editors from The Architect’s Newspaper; the AN New Practices Lounge, showcasing the work of emerging Brooklyn-based architects; and a look inside five notable Brooklyn homes via Dwell Home Tours.

    BKLYN DESIGNS 3.0 is introducing for the first time ever, BKLYN BUYS, the official BKLYN DESIGNS marketplace pavilion. This is a juried marketplace featuring the sale of small home items such as tabletop, linens, ceramics, etc. Please bear in mind, BKLYN BUYS is the cash and carry component to BKLYN DESIGNS. Exhibitors called to participate in the marketplace are responsible for arranging individual POS systems as well as coming adequately prepared with inventory.
