Aja Monet is a poet, performer, and educator from Brooklyn, NYC best known as the youngest individual to win the legendary Nuyorican Poet’s Café Grand Slam title. As well, she was invited to perform for NAACP’s Barack Obama Inaugural event in Washington DC. In 2009 she graduated from Sarah Lawrence College (2009), and received her BA in Liberal Arts. She then received an MFA in Creative Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2011). Aja Monet independently published her first book of poetry, The Black Unicorn Sings (2010). In 2012, she collaborated with poet/musician Saul Williams on a book entitled, Chorus: A Literary Mixtape (MTV Books/Simon & Schuster). In 2014 she pubished a new book of poems entitled, “Inner-City Chants & Cyborg Cyphers”.

NL: Aja Monet groeide op in Brooklyn, NYC. In 2007 werd ze met haar negentien jaar de jongste perfomer/dichter die ooit de legendarische “Nuyorican Poets Café Grand Slam” won. Ze trad op voor Barack Obama tijdens het inhuldigingsevent van de mensenrechtenorganisatie NAACP. In 2009 behaalde ze eerst haar “Bachelor in de vrije kunsten” aan het “Sarah Lawrence College” om nadien verder te studeren aan de “School of the Art Institute of Chicago”, waar ze met glans afstudeert als “Master in het creatief schrijven”. Haar eerste boek The Black Unicorn Sings (2010) bracht ze in eigen beheer uit, net als haar cd Scared to Make Love/Scared Not To op Bandcamp.
