Deep Dish TV Salon Evenings

Thursday, November 13, 2014 with Laura Flanders and Elizabeth Streb

Deep Dish TV’s Thursday, November 13th Salon will be one of the most exciting yet. Television and radio host Laura Flanders will lead a conversation with her partner, famed cheographer and dancer Elizabeth Streb, winner of the 1997 MacArthur Foundation Genius Award.  Elizabeth is the subject of an absolutely thrilling new film by Catherine Gund:  Born to Fly – Elizabeth Streb vs Gravity.   We’ll show segments from Catherine’s film exploring Elizabeth’s sometimes seemingly death-defying choreography. (More below).”Propelled by Elizabeth Streb’s edict that ‘anything too safe is not action,’ the STREB Extreme Action Company challenges the assumptions of art, aging, injury, gender and human possibility.”

Once called the Evel Knievel of dance, Elizabeth Streb’s choreography, which she calls “POPACTION,” intertwines the disciplines of dance, athletics, boxing, rodeo, the circus, and Hollywood stunt-work. The result is a bristling, muscle-and-motion vocabulary that combines daring with strict precision in pursuit of public acts of “pure movement.”

Unfortunately our apartment will not accommodate swinging steel beams or cinder blocks and co-op rules will not permit leaps off the ceiling onto water soaked sponges. So while we invite you to exercise your mind and have some wine, you’ll have to visit the Streb Studio in Willamsburg for a more intense physical experience.
