SLMDances has had a great summer, and we want to spend the end of it with you.

Come to our summer informal studio showing to see what we’ve been working on —

new company members cast in repertory works AND our new work in process, CAKE.

CAKE questions what is respectable, pointing to booty shaking childhood games while our mothers and grandmothers teach us what it is to be “lady-like.”

We consider how doing away with shame around our bodies can enliven us to be constructive and create

new, free realities.

We’ve considered the many meanings of “cake,” and ultimately ask ourselves (and you) the question,

“What are you going to do with your cake?”

Multiple current events (Ferguson, #WhyIStayed, even Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” video)

have spurred discussions in rehearsal, and we’ve compiled a reading list of the articles that have helped us expand our views on these matters.

Click here to jump to the list below, and if you have a response to an article, please add it to our ongoing discussion on Facebook.See you next week!
