Experience the Pulse of the World! Social Media Week 9/27

We LOVED the vibrancy and immediacy of this event last year, and crowds responded. This year is even More AMBITIOUS.

With almost 1,000 events taking place in 11 cities and 9 countries (US, Brazil, UK, Italy, Germany, Holland, India, South Africa and Australia), and with almost 3,000 speakers confirmed, Social Media Week 2014, sponsored by Microsoft, will be, in our humble opinion, one the world’s most culturally diverse and geographically distributed conferences of its kind.

To view the full global schedule and connect with other community members download the SMW Mobile app.

With an event of this kind and operating at this scale there are however some frustrations; for instance not being physically able to attend every session and experience everything first hand!  The breadth, diversity and range of topics being covered is breathtaking.  Combine this with the wealth of new ideas that will be shared during the week and you can clearly see why wanting to be everywhere is so appealing.

One way you can achieve this is by watching a selection of the events via the livestream, which you can do online or via the mobile app. Simply create a profile and favorite the events you are interested in tuning in to and you’re good to go.

If you unsure of what to check out, fear not, I have curated a short-list of some of the best sessions that caught my eye while I was perusing the schedule, which shouldn’t take more than five minutes to explore.

`Social Media Week

Kick off the week in The Windy City, Chicago, and hear from Mayor Rahm Emanuel discuss the relationship between the City and technology, and why entrepreneurs and creative minds are flocking to Chicago.

Next, take a trip to Berlin for a masterclass with Microsoft on sci-fi, marketing, and the history of the office space. Hear from a Product Marketing Manager on the shift of culture and communications in our hyper-connected world.

For the adventure-seekers, prepare yourself for a panel in sunny Sydney, where you’ll learn all about the media and marketing landscape in Australia. Speakers from LinkedIn, Nielsen, and Salesforce will map out how Aussies use social media in their daily lives, and why the country is such an early adopter of innovative technology.

From Sydney, hop on a plane for 20 or so hours (or, just watch the livestream) and check out Sao Paulo’s case study presentation on MasterCard to learn about how the innovative credit card company humanized its social media strategy throughout Brazil.

End the night in star-studded Los Angeles for an evening of celebrations. Grab a drink, and celebrate the start of Social Media Week. The “SMW Social 25” party honors the next class of 25 individuals, organizations, and brands influencing the future of social media.

Your first day was just a taste of what’s to come the rest of Social Media Week. In the morning, take a trip across the pond to London. Fancy yourself some tea, and claim your seat for a panel and presentation on social advertising from leaders in the industry from Twitter, Microsoft, and Sysomos.

After breakfast, prepare yourself for one of the world’s most picturesque cities, Johannesburg, where you’ll spend the next hour learning the in’s and out’s of Instagram as a powerful marketing tool for your business and brand. Did you know that 65% of Instagram’s users are outside the United States?

Finish the day where you started, back in London for an evening of “Pub Trivia” with your new social media friends and connections. Along with We Are Social and Ticketmaster, test your knowledge of 2014’s social media stories, including the highs, the lows, the heart-warmers, and the flat out bizarre. There might also be a few challenges throughout the often-sold-out event.

Kick off Wednesday in The Netherlands with a look into Silicon Valley and the tech startup scene. Located in the “LOL Cat Room” in Rotterdam, you’ll hear from a journalist who spent the last two years reporting on the tech and entrepreneurship scene in the Valley.

Next up, head over to Rome for a discussion on open-source journalism and content discovery. Discuss which social networks will maximize your content across social media on a global scale.

On Thursday, whether you’re jamming out on the northern beaches of Sydney, or experiencing the Sydney Opera House, you won’t want to miss this panel covering the evolution of music and social media. Speakers from MTV Australia, Universal Music, and Pandora will discuss social media’s impact on artist, music discovery, audience engagement, and concert-goers, and crazed fans.

Later that afternoon, experience the newest trends in fashion, technology, and wearable devices. From 3D printed shoes and LED dresses, to smart-watches and the future of retail. Hear from fashion and technology leaders on what these trends mean, and how long they’re here to stay.

After a busy Thursday, check out Mumbai’s panel on stand-up comedy in India, a rapidly growing sector of the entertainment world. Listen to brilliant comics and performers share stories on using social media to launch their careers, connecting with fans for offline shows, and what makes these funny people laugh throughout the day.
