  • D’Angelo

    D’Angelo

D’Angelo is a classic American soul singer best known for his sultry song “How Does It Feel” and his energetic live performances. Influenced by and comparable to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Curtis Mayfield, and Al Green, he is also known for his production and songwriting talents. Even though he only released two studio albums – Brown Sugar in 1995 and Voodoo in 2000 – he has maintained his preeminent role in the R&B and soul genres by making cameos and guest appearances with other artists such as the Roots and Lauryn Hill and, of course with the longevity of his music.

Offering a mostly acoustic and hushed hybrid of alternative folk and soul, Lianne La Havas was born and raised in London, England, the daughter of a Jamaican mother and Greek father. The singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist was a member of the Paris Parade with Christian Pinchbeck, but the act proved to be short-lived. La Havas eventually shifted to solo work and released “Lost & Found”, a four-track EP in October 2011. Two months after she opened for Bon Iver during a North American tour and it was announced that she had been nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2012 poll. “Is Your Love Big Enough?,” La Havas’ debut album for Warner Bros., was released in the U.K. in July 2012; the U.S. release followed a month later.

    Meshell Ndegeocello

Meshell Ndegeocello scored a few hits early in her career, the bassist, singer, and songwriter later opted to concentrate on more challenging material by exploring the politics of race and sex, among other topics. From her 1993 Maverick label debut through her releases of the 2010s for Naïve, she built a discography of recordings that defied classification through progressive mixtures of jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and rock. Initially held in regard primarily for her bass playing and bold lyrics, her songwriting, which often examined dark interpersonal issues, was just as exceptional.

Straight Line Stitch initially formed around 2000 and issued an EP and a demo album before adding female vocalist Alexis Brown from Clarksville, Tennessee to the band in 2003. Brown sang on their self-released 2006 effort “To Be Godlike”, for which they filmed a video for the single “Remission”. The video’s director, Dale Resteghini, owned the production company Raging Nation Films; in 2007 he formed a subsidiary label of Koch Records called Raging Nation Records, and Straight Line Stitch became the label’s first signing. Their first nationally distributed album, “When Skies Wash Ashore”, appeared on the imprint in 2008, with another album, “The Fight of Our Lives”, arriving in 2011. “The Fight of Our Lives” reached No. 5 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and No. 34 on the Top Independent Albums chart. There are rumors of an album being released in 2014, but it has not been confirmed.

The first hip-hop crew signed to the Sub Pop label, Shabazz Palaces is the brainchild of Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, although the Digable Planets member isn’t so quick to admit it. In 2009, Shabazz Palaces released two EPs, one self-titled, the other titled “Of Light” but Butler’s name didn’t appear on either. No promo shots, no social networking sites, no interviews and no press releases were issued by the enigmatic, Seattle-based project, but that didn’t stop the local press from throwing praise at these EPs, which hit much harder than Digable while retaining that forward-thinking wordplay. The EPs became favorites at the Sub Pop offices too, and in 2010, the usually indie rock label signed the project, releasing their debut album, Black Up, in 2011.

Fishbone has been trailblazing their way through the history of American Ska, funk, punk, rock fusion and (so-called) black rrockock since starting their professional career in Los Angeles’ burgeoning, Alternative rock music scene of the mid-1980s. Their sound has often been imitated, but never duplicated. They have toured worldwide with such bands as the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Roots, Les Claypool/Primus, Fela Kuti, George Clinton, The Dead Kennedys and many more. Alice Smith

Alice Smith, born in Washington D.C., is, on the evidence of her solo debut, “For Lovers, Dreamers & Me” (BBE Records), the most promising female singer-songwriter to go her own enrapturing way in a very long time. Her voice, with its four-octave range, is luscious and powerful and nuanced and finely sensitive to rhythm. Yet Smith never loses the unlearnable balance and poise that separates good singers from great ones. And her basic attitudes, which are audible in every unforced phrase she negotiates, are all her own.

    Unlocking the Truth

Unlocking the Truth is a young metal band from Brooklyn, New York, who write and create their own lyrics and music. The founding band members are Malcolm Brickhouse (electric guitar) and Jarad Dawkins (drums). In March of 2012, Unlocking the Truth competed on Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater and made it to the Show-Off Round, and afterward they began performing at festivals around New York City and in Times Square. Last year Malcolm and Jarad decided they needed a bass player, so they asked their best friend from pre-school, Alec Atkins, to join their band. Even though Alec did not know how to play bass, the boys taught him how to play from scratch. One of Unlocking the Truth’s biggest breaks came last August after winning the first round of the Afropunk Battle of the Bands. Although they did not win the final battle, they were still invited to perform at the Afropunk Festival.

  • Denitia and Sene.

    Denitia and Sene.

IIn true Brooklyn custom, the two artists met while attending a party one night at a spot they refer to as the “The Clubhouse,” an old Victorian home serving as a residence, community space, and recording studio for a collective of local artists. Sene, a rapper, was looking for someone to sing hooks on his new album, and Denitia, a singer-songwriter, welcomed the challenge. He gave her the scratch vocals; she nailed it and then some; and suddenly, they were part of the New York fairytale so many artists call a dream. It’s Brooklyn at its finest – it’s serendipity. It’s denitia and sene. After their initial collaboration went better than expected, denitia and sene. decided to take it one step further and form a twosome, allowing Sene, a Brooklyn native, to tap into his musical skills beyond hip-hop, and Denitia to explore a more sultry, theatrical side of her character. Both were inspired by a variety of artists and backgrounds, listing Sade, the Fugees, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Beatles, and Janet Jackson as a few of their shared favorites. Such diversity is reflected in the dynamism of their own sound, from smooth bass lines and reverberating vocals to synth-laden blues and abbreviated narratives. It’s kind of like nothing else out there, and that is the intention.

    Jasmine Solano + MeLo-X

Over 4 years ago, an enterprising Jasmine Solano and MeLo-X, had the idea of pooling together their respective loves of Reggae, hip-hop, and electronic music to form what would be titled Electric Punanny. Within the sweaty walls of NYC’s SWAY nightclub, Electric Punanny would grow to become one of NYC’s most popular monthly parties. Jasmine and Melo (each respected selectors and emcee’s in their own rights) enlisted the accomplished night life promoter Roxy Cottontail, and photographer TONE, to capture not only the visuals, but the mood and energy of each bash. Those who would become regulars of “EP” came to love and appreciate the diverse mix of characters, the perspiration inducing sounds, and just the right amount of raunch to keep everyone thirsting for more. What started out as a series of parties had come to represent a cross section of NYC’s downtown youth, indie, & street cultures, as well as a venue where creativity and true art in music would coalesce.
