Design Entrepreneurs NYC is a tuition-free, intensive “mini-MBA.” The top designer wins $25,000 in this program, which equips select NYC fashion designers with the skills needed to successfully run a fashion label, including marketing, operations, and financial management. With the help of industry experts, each participant writes and/or refines a business plan, and participants who successfully complete the program have the opportunity to present their plans to and receive feedback from a panel of influential fashion leaders. Three Weekend Intensives
10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Participants will learn the ins and outs of running a fashion business from FIT faculty members and industry veterans with relevant expertise. Topics are as follows:

Weekend 1: Fashion Business Marketing

June 16 – August 18, 2014

Summer Development
Participants will be able to work with instructors online to refine and finalize their business plans. Additionally, there will be a number of optional summer sessions in which participants can receive in-person guidance on their business plans as well as participate in specialized workshops run by seasoned industry professionals.

August 28, 2014

Presentation Skills Workshop
All participants will master the art of the pitch in small groups. By workshop’s end, participants will have honed their ability to captivate audiences and deliver a compelling message.

September 18, 2014

The Pitch: Business Plan Presentations
Participants who successfully complete the Design Entrepreneurs NYC program will have the opportunity to present their business plans to and receive feedback from a panel of influential industry leaders. These leaders will provide unique insight based on their own experience on what it takes for a business to grow and succeed in the NYC fashion industry.


Criteria for Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Have a NYC-based fashion design business (womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, and/or accessories)
  • Be committed to attending all mandatory events (i.e., kick-off, weekend intensives, presentation skills workshop, closing events)
  • Have been in business for at least one year
  • Demonstrate traction in the industry (i.e., press coverage, sales, etc.)

Application Process

Phase 1: Application – Deadline: March 31, 2014
To be considered for participation in Design Entrepreneurs NYC, you must complete an application form. The application form will ask for basic personal information, company information, as well as responses to a few short answer questions.

Applications must be submitted to by 11:59 PM on Monday, March 31, 2014. We encourage candidates to submit their applications early as they will be considered on a rolling basis.

Phase 2: Review & Selection
The Design Entrepreneurs NYC Selection Committee, consisting of NYC-based fashion industry experts and leaders, will carefully review all applications and will determine who will be selected to join the 2013 class of Design Entrepreneurs NYC. Interviews may be scheduled, as needed, in April with select applicants.

Participants will be selected on the basis of their fulfillment of the eligibility criteria, including, without limitation, the overall quality of their business, and the strength of their application response.

Notwithstanding the forgoing, the Design Entrepreneurs NYC Selection Committee reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to consider eligibility criteria other than and in addition to the criteria set forth on this website in selecting participants to join the 2014 class of Design Entrepreneurs NYC. Individuals who do not meet one or more of the eligibility criteria may apply to and be considered for participation in the program.

Phase 3: Notification
Designers selected to participate in the program will be notified via e-mail by early May with information on next steps. Candidates not selected will also be notified by early May.

The Fashion Institute of Technology, a part of the State University of New York, has been a leader in career education in art, design, business, and technology for nearly 70 years.
