Be part of the process! WOW, an experimental opera based on themes stemming from the story of Milli Vanilli, is a work-in-progress piece being performed for six nights only, between January 23 – February 1, 2014. The performances are being developed as part of BRIC’s Fireworks Residency, which fosters multidisciplinary, collaborative works in BRIC House.

Diebes’ score is said to be a deconstruction of Wagner’s “Meistersinger,” from which he’s broken down every instrumental line, measure by measure. For each performance, he will then sequence those snatches of music and send them to various computer monitors, to be read and played by the performers in real time. As a result, no two performances of the opera will be the same, as even the vocal melodies will change based on the conductor’s approach and conduction.

Quite an ambitious approach to tell the story of the 1990 Grammy Award winners, who lip-synced their performances and did not even record their own albums. Disgraced, one of them eventually committed suicide.

We applaud composer Joe Diebes, poet Christian Hawkey, and David Levine and BRIC for bringing it to Brooklyn. We recommend you rush to hear this unfold.
