Defining Myself for Myself: Women of Color Make Documentary Films

Women of color offer an original perspective and point of view, documenting films that are not just the recording of reality. They are purposeful in their storytelling intent. Their stories define women of color by women of color.

Lewis, producer/director of the forthcoming film “Black Pete, Zwarte Piet: The Documentary”; Dr. Marta Vega, director “When the Spirits Dance Mambo”; and Christine Turner, director of Homecomings and Rubber Soles. Award-winning author Tananarive Due will share her recent journey in adapting a novel into a screenplay to produce her first short film. Be the first to preview Ms. Due’s Danger Word, a short horror film directed by Luchina Fisher and adapted for the screen by Ms. Due.  Tananarive will discuss everything from raising funds for an independent film project to the challenges of translating a literary work for a visual audience. Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series celebrates its 16th Anniversary with an exciting selection of films, discussions, a workshop and awards ceremony on Sunday, October 13 honoring Shola Lynch, the producer/director of Free Angela & All Political Prisoners and Issa Rae, the creator/producer of the hit web series The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl. Reel Sisters is a Brooklyn-based film festival founded by African Voices magazine and Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus, that will be presenting 20 films produced, directed or written by women of color from across the globe.Section E: Awards Ceremony 6:45-8:15pm
